Own Your Faith

NOTE: All quoted passages are taken from the American Standard Version of the Holy Bible, unless otherwise noted.

What exactly does it mean to own your faith. It means to be personally responsible for what you believe where God and the bible are concerned, not just a sheep following this preacher or that, simply because you like their style or whatever. The bible talks about it in Ephesians 4:14 " that we may be no longer children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error; " So, it's up to you to look into what you're being fed so you know if it's good wholesome food or not.

To start off on the right footing, it would be helpful to have a good definition of what faith is -
Hebrews 11:1 " Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, a conviction of things not seen."

Followed by where do you get it from - Romans 10:17 " So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (King James Version) The hearing that this passage talks of isn't merely having something enter your ears and rattle around a bit. No, it's nearly a whole body experience. When you hear the way it's talking about, you incorporate what is said into your very being, making it an integral part of you!

On to the process of owning it. Here are some thoughts for your consideration:

You are human, and therefor fallible. It's not an insult at all, simply a statement of fact! You are growing and changing every day you draw breath, so remember that your understanding can do that, too. 1Corinthians 13:11 " When I was a child, I spake as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child: now that I am become a man, I have put away childish things."

Approach the search for knowledge and truth innocently, and not with ANY preconceived notions of the potential outcome. Don't go into it with the idea of proving yourself correct or someone else wrong. Allow God to reveal his thoughts on whatever matter you have a question about. The main goal should always be a greater understanding of God and his ways.

Trust in the Spirit of truth - John 16:13 " Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come." There are many gifted and Spirit filled teachers and preachers out there. You still have a responsibility to verify the messages being delivered, and particularly if something doesn't seem quite right or doesn't fit in with your current beliefs. Let God lead you - James 1:5 " If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him."

Confront the terror. I once heard a wonderful definition of courage - courage is not the absence of fear, but overriding that fear to do what is necessary. Don't back away from the responsibility for your relationship with God and Jesus Christ. Don't cheat yourself by blindly following what might be termed 'professional Christians' as they try to tell you what to do and believe about the world and living your life.

Instead, talk to the one who has a perfect, personalized plan for your life and well being. Isaiah 1:18 " Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." It's your life we're talking about, and it's a journey that will last till you exhale your last breath! Grab hold of it and make the most out of it in meaningful ways, and be assured that God is in it for the whole thing!

- 1 Samuel 12:22 " For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name's sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make you his people."
